"Hafen" in Los Chiles, Costa Rica. Vor der Ueberfahrt nach San Carlos, Nicaragua.
Los Chiles is a small village at the boarder to Nicaragua. There we had to do a lot of offical stuff, till we could go on traveling. From Los Chiles you have to do a two hours boat trip to San Carlos in Nicaragua. We bought a ticket for the trip and they gave us a playing card. For a moment we thougt this was maybe a joke, but this cards are used as counting system till the boat is full. The boat tour took us through an impressing countryside, on both sides of the river are big trees and a lot of birds. And with some "buena suerte" you can also see monkeys on the trees.
We had to pass a military jackpoint and then we were in Nicaragua! When we left the boat in San Carlos we came to a total different world. The houses look older, smaller, the shops are very simple like in africa, but the people were really friendly. Our aim was to travel to Boca de Sabolos, a village on the river San Juan, three hours boattrip down in the direction of the atlantic. We bought the tickets, payed in dollars and got cordobas back. The river San Juan is very big and an important way to travel. We passed big trees, a lot of birds and a few houses along the river. After nearly three hours we reached Boca de Sabolos.Boca de Sabolo, Nicaragua
Boca heisst Mund und Sabolo ist der Fluss der in den grossen Rio San Juan fliesst. Poor Nica.
We wanted to take a room in the Sabolos Hotel but all the rooms there were occupied. A nice nicaraguan wellfeed guy helped us to find another place to sleep: Sabolos Lodge! With a short boattrip we came there. Our first impression was, oh god we are on the wrong place. Sabolos Lodge is quiet expensive, 40 dollars for a night in a cabaña, but is also a high level. After the confrontation with the poverty in Nicaragua, it was strange to stay in this place. But it was evening, we were tired from the trip and so we decided to stay. Our cabaña had the name of Chita, other names were Tarzan or Jane, you can see, we had real jungle-feeling. After this long day of traveling we went to bed very early, in the background the noise of the river and the forrest, I slept very well. ..............Outside
and inside
Next morning we woke up through the noise of the howling monkeys and the river, just passing by a few meters in front of our house, and the rain. We had a nice breakfast and after this the rain stopped. So we decided to walk to the village, which was about twenty minutes away. When we left, the woman of the hotel said: "suerte" which means good luck. Why?? Should we be afraid? We started our walk on a small way wirh many holes , some of them filled with water. Then we came to a fence, we had to cross a place with cows, horses and goats, and in the background we heard howling monkeys. It was quit strange to walk through!
We went on and after half an hour we came to the street, which leads to the village. The street had many holes, the houses were built of rodden wood and all looked very poor. Also the village was very different from all the places we saw in Costa Rica.
At the river a guide named Julio offered us a boattrip and we accepted. After a simple lunch in a local restaurant together with a lot of pupils, we went up the Sabolos river with a small motorboat.
We saw lots of birds und turtles laying on wooden pices in the water. On both sides of the river are houses and sometimes small villages. The people use the river as their bathroom and also for washing their cloth. Julio brought us to a village, were he showed us the palmtreefields, cocoa and mangotrees. A big rich family in Nicaragua wants to force the production of palmoil ( from african palmtrees ). For one tone of palmfruits a farmer gets 40 dollars, the same price that we had to pay for the boattrip and also for a night in Sabolos Lodge, crazy?
After coming back we went to the Lodge, used the rest of the day, which ends at about 6`clock, for reading in the hammock.
